(where it all started and how we got here)
Humble beginnings

In 2011, Martha Ellen Mabry set up shop in a humble basement on Berry Street, and Headchop was born. The one-chair-wonder/artist workshop quickly blossomed into a full-fledged specialty hair studio that focused on treating hair of all textures in its most native state —dry and natural.
Making waves

As Headchop made waves in NYC, it’s team swiftly grew. And soon enough, the days of walk-in services were gone. Our esteemed artists began booking their specialized services 1-2 months in advance.
A new extension

In 2022, Lil’ Chop was introduced as the express version of Headchop!
The Lil’ Chop location expanded our space and offerings providing more availability for day-of and week-of bookings. The new location introduced a new kind of dry bar offering stylings for natural curl outside of the typical blowout styling. We launched a full menu of offerings for event styling including hair and makeup bookings on-location and in-house, and introduced a bookable private suite. The expansion of the brand brought a genuinely new way to experience being taken care of ;)
The future of the brands

Now, in 2025, Martha Ellen has joined her two brands Headchop & Lil’ Chop together at 98 South 4th street in South Williamsburg.
Headchop now offers a full spectrum of services including dry cutting, coloring, dry bar styling for curly and straight hair, and luxury extension services.
Lil’ Chop operates as a creative agency with a full team of artists offering event, wedding, and session hair and makeup stylings in-house & on-location.
As a space, Lil’ Chop rents its facility for creative productions, film, photography, and welcomes its community to host an assortment of gatherings from engagement parties to brand activations!

Our Partnerships
Headchop & Lil’ Chop partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Owner and founder, Martha Ellen Mabry, holds a speaker position with the LLS, sharing her personal experience fighting Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and shedding light and positivity in the cancer community located throughout New York!

Hair For You is an bi-annual fundraiser hosted by Lil’ Chop. Kicking off its debut in October of 2023, the fundraiser was a genuine success raising $7,126. In 2024 Hair For You raised $9,318 placing its team, Hair-raising Heroes, at #8 top fundraisers for Manhattan Light the Night! Martha Ellen has been honored as the #3 fundraiser for the Emerging Leaders of LLS.
This amazing event could not have been possible without the valuable support of our neighbors, friends, and local businesses contributing to out efforts. We are so thankful for everyone involved and look forward to growth in 2024.
